Business Development Manager

Catalist is currently seeking applicants for a Business Development Manager. This role sits at the intersection of technology, politics, and sales. The Business Development Manager will regularly interact directly with clients, internal departments, and data. This position will manage the Business Development Associate.

This is both a forward-facing and behind-the-scenes role, and requires an individual with experience supporting both sides of progressive organizations’ data needs. The Business Development Manager will work across departments alongside the Business Development Director and will take ownership of numerous high level projects from start to finish. Success in this role requires a balance of personable “customer service” communication with clients, excellent follow-through, and ability to translate client needs to data deliverables. Deep familiarity with how data is used in the progressive ecosphere is essential for this position. Disciplined project and time management are necessary for success in this position. 

Your support will help Democratic candidates and progressive organizations conduct successful advocacy and electoral campaigns. A willingness to occasionally work outside of normal business hours is required.

This position reports to the Business Development Director and Chief Client Officer and is part of the Marketing Team.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Business Development Associate as they fulfill organic inbound projects, ensuring the successful delivery of requests on time, accurately, and in a client-friendly format with actionable insights where applicable
  • Draft business development materials, including official proposals, presentations, and brief memos
  • Create and implement strategies to optimize the use of Salesforce
  • Collaborate with Business Development Director and Marketing team to identify new client segments and product-driven opportunities
  • Maintain an understanding of current technical and analytic product offerings – in production and under development – to facilitate the translation of that information to current and potential clients, in person, through presentations, and through written deliverables
  • Work closely with the Data, Analytics, and Finance teams to scope and fulfill client requests for high touch clients
  • Support the work of the Business Development team by researching clients and preparing briefing materials 


The ideal candidate is a collaborative and highly motivated self-starter. This is not a 9-5 job; the Business Development Manager will spend time at partner and progressive community events to maintain and expand expertise and connections. 

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working with organizations using political data or in a political organization or campaign
  • Minimum 3 years of experience selling services or products to political organizations or campaigns
  • Minimum 2 years of in-depth experience using Salesforce
  • Must be able to work independently – with guidance but limited supervision
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; must expertly translate complicated subjects into digestible presentations, “find the level of the room,” and be creative and personable
  • An existing political network in politics and/or advocacy is strongly encouraged 
  • Ability to diagnose client needs and creatively configure and recommend solutions to meet them
  • Must be able to work well within a team environment and across multiple teams
  • Background check is required


  • There are no formal educational requirements for this position, but you will be engaging in technical work, so we recommend a working familiarity with large datasets used in political campaigns.


This is a full time permanent position. Catalist is currently working remotely due to the pandemic. Compensation for this position is $70,000 to $75,000, based on experience. Catalist offers a strong benefits package, detailed below.

Personal Leave & Vacation

Catalist offers vacation benefits to all full-time, permanent staff. During the first year of employment, employees will accrue one vacation day per calendar month. Employees are eligible to take vacation leave after the initial ninety days of employment. At the beginning of the second year of employment, employees will be issued fifteen days of vacation per employment year. In addition to vacation, each employee will be allowed three personal days per calendar year, to be used as needed, but no more than one personal day may be used in any calendar month unless approved in advance by a supervisor. Personal leave may be used for medical appointments scheduled during work hours.
