Legal Assistant

Catalist is currently seeking applicants for a full-time Legal Assistant position with a flexible start date and  a preferred minimum commitment of 2 years. This is a unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience at the intersection of technology, politics, and law.  

The Legal Assistant is a key member of the legal team and supports the Chief Legal Office and General Counsel. Your support will help Democratic candidates and progressive organizations conduct successful advocacy and electoral campaigns. A willingness to occasionally work outside of normal business hours is required.

This position reports to the Chief Legal Officer.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage a wide range of legal responsibilities under the guidance of the Chief Legal Officer or General Counsel
  • Maintain legal files and records
  • Assist with templates and contract management
  • Review contracts and legal documents (examples include corporate and formation documents, data license and services agreements, NDAs, vendor agreements, and professional services and consulting agreements)
  • Research compliance and regulatory matters
  • Implement legal policies and procedures
  • Provide legal training for business colleagues
  • Partner with Business Development, Human Resources, and Finance on interdepartmental matters

Skills & Experience:

The ideal candidate will have an interest in working with progressive clients of all backgrounds and have a strong desire to learn how clients leverage political data. Experience in a legal setting or with a data licensing company is a plus.

  • 1-3 years of work experience (including internships, fellowships, work-study, and volunteer positions)
  • Outstanding organizational skills
  • Strong drafting and issue spotting skills
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems independently
  • Experience researching complex issues; familiarity with Lexis or Westlaw is a plus
  • Ability to effectively handle shifting priorities and adapt to changing demands in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all levels of the organization and demonstrate a team-oriented work style
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Background check required

Salary:

Catalist is currently working remotely due to the pandemic. Compensation for this position starts at $55,000 – $60,000, commensurate with experience. Catalist offers a strong benefits package, detailed below.

Personal Leave & Vacation

Catalist offers vacation benefits to all full-time, permanent staff. During the first year of employment, employees will accrue one vacation day per calendar month. Employees are eligible to take vacation leave after the initial ninety days of employment. At the beginning of the second year of employment, employees will be issued fifteen days of vacation per employment year. In addition to vacation, each employee will be allowed three personal days per calendar year, to be used as needed, but no more than one personal day may be used in any calendar month unless approved in advance by a supervisor. Personal leave may be used for medical appointments scheduled during work hours.
