Senior Software Engineer

The Catalist Technology Department development team is responsible for designing, implementing, and supporting tools to facilitate our client’s access to Catalist data. These tools range from Web based interactive GUIs to APIs as well as all the backend components and services required to support them. As a Senior Software Engineer at Catalist, you will participate in all aspects of the product life cycle; the design and implementation of new products, the support of existing tools, and the deprecation of legacy offerings. 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Utilize your experience to design and implement software solutions
  • Advocate for simple, straightforward design
  • Be a leader on the development team; mentor junior developers and help make those around you better
  • Help the technology team provide accurate resourcing estimates
  • Assist product management in translating acceptance criteria into development plans
  • Debug issues across all of Catalist’s production offerings

Skills & Experience:

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following:

  • Can-do attitude that drives tasks to completion on schedule
  • Logical problem solver who is not deterred by new and unknown technologies
  • Core Technical Skills: SQL, Java, Python, Working in Unix Environments
  • Bonus Skills: Hadoop/Spark, Scala, Cloud Databases (Redshift or BigQuery)
  • Experience in political environments with hard deadlines a plus
  • Background check required

Education:

A bachelor's of science degree or equivalent experience is required for this position.

Salary:

This is a full-time job in Washington, DC. Compensation will range from $110,000-$130,000 per year, commensurate with experience and relevant skill.

Personal Leave & Vacation

Catalist offers vacation benefits to all full-time, permanent staff. During the first year of employment, employees will accrue one vacation day per calendar month. Employees are eligible to take vacation leave after the initial ninety days of employment. At the beginning of the second year of employment, employees will be issued fifteen days of vacation per employment year. In addition to vacation, each employee will be allowed three personal days per calendar year, to be used as needed, but no more than one personal day may be used in any calendar month unless approved in advance by a supervisor. Personal leave may be used for medical appointments scheduled during work hours.
